NAIDOC Week 2023

NAIDOC Week 2023 takes place from July 2 - 9 and this year’s theme, “For Our Elders,” holds immense significance. Our beloved Elders, as custodians of cultural knowledge, pioneers, nurturers, advocates, and leaders, have played a pivotal role in shaping our communities and families. During this week, we come together to pay tribute to their wisdom and love, acknowledging their invaluable contributions throughout the ages.

To commemorate the special occasion, various events have been organised throughout the week in and around the precinct. On July 6th there will be a First Nations fashion parade hosted by King St. This parade will showcase the stunning creations of Indigenous designers, celebrating their unique styles and traditions, it promises to be a captivating display of cultural expression and creativity.

Our resident childcare, Guardian Early Learning Centre, has also joined in the celebration by running a colouring competition using Indigenous drawings. This fun initiative allows children to engage with Indigenous art and learn about its rich symbolism and storytelling traditions. Encouraging the younger generation to appreciate and respect Indigenous culture is an essential step towards fostering unity and understanding.

The Fortitude Valley State Secondary College will be joining us for a walk on King St, accompanied by First Nations artist Emma Hollingsworth. This walk will provide an opportunity for the students to engage in meaningful conversation about Emma’s artwork displayed in the Machinery Street Gallery window.

While NAIDOC Week serves as a dedicated time to celebrate and acknowledge our Elders, let us carry this spirit throughout the year. Let's strive to foster ongoing relationships with Elders, listening to their stories, seeking their guidance, and embracing their wisdom. By doing so, we can ensure the continuity of Indigenous traditions and strengthen the bonds between generations.
